What to Expect
This naturally processed Red Bourbon from Rwanda's Mbizi Washing Station delivers a silky, fruit-forward cup with surprising elegance. Grown between 1,600 and 1,900 metres in the Kamonyi District, it brings black cherry sweetness, maple syrup richness, and a delicate Darjeeling tea finish that lingers long after the cup cools.
The Cup
The body is silky and medium-weight, coating your palate without heaviness. Acidity is moderate and malic, giving the cherry notes a juicy, rounded quality rather than sharp brightness. The natural process adds depth and sweetness, but this is a clean natural, not a funky one. You get fruit character without ferment or booze, which makes it approachable even if you're usually wary of naturals. The floral tea-like finish keeps things refined.
Who This Is For
This suits drinkers who want fruit and sweetness but prefer clarity over wild fermentation. It's a gateway natural for those curious about the process but not ready for full-on funk.
If you prefer bright, citric acidity or very light-bodied coffees, this one will feel too round and sweet.
Best for: Filter drinkers who like fruity, sweet coffees with a clean finish and medium body.
How to Brew This Coffee
A V60 will highlight the cherry and tea notes while keeping the cup clean and layered. Filter methods like Kalita Wave or Chemex bring out the maple sweetness and silky texture beautifully. An Aeropress works well if you want a slightly fuller body with concentrated fruit character.

This exceptional Red Bourbon coffee comes from Rwanda’s Southern Province, in the Kamonyi District, where it is produced at the Mbizi Washing Station through the Women Coffee Extension (WCE) program. Grown at elevations between 1,600 and 1,900 meters above sea level, the coffee thrives in rich volcanic soils and a carefully maintained farming environment. Sustainable farming practices including shade tree planting, erosion control, and water recycling systems help support a healthy, regenerative ecosystem. The WCE program empowers more than 800 women farmers, many of whom are widows or survivors affected by the 1994 genocide. Through hands-on training and long-term support, the initiative equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to produce exceptional-quality coffee while building sustainable and independent livelihoods for themselves and their communities. After harvest, the coffee undergoes a natural processing method and is sun-dried on raised beds for 30 to 35 days. This slow, careful drying process develops remarkable depth and clarity in the cup, bringing forward rich notes of black cherry, layered with the smooth sweetness of maple syrup and the delicate, floral elegance of Darjeeling tea. The result is a clean and vibrant coffee with a silky body, refined sweetness, and a beautifully complex finish that reflects the distinctive terroir of Rwanda. This description comes from Clifton Coffee Roasters UK, who roasts this coffee.
