What to Expect

This natural-processed coffee from Timor-Leste's Rotutu cooperative brings wine-like fruit character with a treacle sweetness that keeps things grounded. Dear Green has roasted it to let the passionfruit and red grape notes shine without tipping into overwhelming funk.

The Cup

The body sits somewhere between medium and full, with a syrupy quality that comes from both the natural process and that treacle sweetness. Acidity is moderate and fruity rather than sharp—think ripe red grapes, not citrus. There's definite fermented fruit character here: the passionfruit brings a tropical, slightly funky edge that some drinkers love and others find too unusual. The treacle acts as ballast, adding depth and keeping the fruit from dominating completely.

Who This Is For

If you enjoy fruit-forward naturals but want something with a bit more weight and sweetness than the typical berry-bomb Ethiopian, this delivers complexity without being one-note.

If you prefer clean, bright, washed coffees, the fermented tropical fruit character here will feel too heavy and unusual.

Best for: Natural process fans who appreciate wine-like fruit with enough body to make it interesting rather than just intense.

How to Brew This Coffee

A V60 will give you the clearest view of the passionfruit and grape notes, separating the fruit from the treacle sweetness. Filter methods work similarly, offering clarity and balance across the cup. An Aeropress lets you dial the intensity up or down depending on whether you want the fruit or the sweetness to lead.

Description from Roaster

Red grape, passionfruit, and treacle. Rich, full-bodied, and fruit-forward. This natural lot from Rotutu in Timor-Leste shows a deeper, more expressive side of the same coffee. Expect juicy red grape and bright passionfruit up front, balanced by a dark, treacle-like sweetness ...
