What to Expect
This Tanzanian SL28 from Ngila Estate brings the jammy, fruit-forward character the variety is famous for in Kenya, but with a roast profile built for espresso. Expect blueberry to lead, backed by golden raisin sweetness and a darker prune note that anchors the cup.
The Cup
The body is medium to full, with a syrupy, structured mouthfeel that holds up well in milk. Acidity is moderate rather than piercing — bright enough to keep the fruit notes lively, but rounded by the espresso roast. This is a clean, washed coffee with no funk, just clear, jammy fruit character that cuts through milk surprisingly well. The blueberry note is distinct enough to survive a flat white, which is rare.
Who This Is For
This suits espresso drinkers who want fruit without sacrificing body, and milk drinkers who are tired of chocolate-only profiles. It's also a good choice for anyone curious about SL28 outside Kenya.
If you prefer delicate, tea-like filter coffees or very high acidity, this medium-dark roast will feel too heavy and muted.
Best for: Espresso and milk drinkers who want jammy fruit that doesn't disappear under steam.
How to Brew This Coffee
Start with espresso — the roast was designed for it, and the blueberry note is structured enough to shine in milk drinks. Try it on an Aeropress if you want a concentrated, fruit-forward black coffee with good body. For a cleaner, more delicate take on the fruit, a V60 will open up the golden raisin sweetness and let the acidity breathe.

The SL28 variety is most commonly associated with Kenya, but this lot from Tanzania’s Ngila Estate beautifully showcases what the variety can achieve just across the border.
We approached this roast with espresso in mind, focusing on highlighting a distinct, jammy blueberry note that defines the cup. What makes this coffee particularly interesting, though, is its versatility.
Brewed black—whether pulled as a shot, plunged on an AeroPress, or poured as a filter—it’s vibrant and fruit-forward. But where it really surprised us is in milk. The blueberry note is structured enough to cut right through, making for a really distinctive, sweet flat white.
