What to Expect
This is India's Monsoon Malabar, a dark-roasted, monsooned coffee from the Malabar coast. The beans are exposed to monsoon winds and rain in open warehouses, swelling dramatically and developing a bold, earthy, spicy character that's unlike anything else. It's heavy, pungent, and musty in the best possible way.
The Cup
Expect a heavy, syrupy body with low acidity and deep, earthy flavours. This is not a bright or fruity coffee. The monsooning process strips away the sharpness and leaves you with something dark, spicy, and almost tobacco-like. It's clean in the sense that there's no ferment funk, but the dominant character is bold and brooding. The roast is taken well into second crack, so oils coat the beans and the flavour leans into roasty, musty depth rather than origin nuance.
Who This Is For
If you like your coffee strong, dark, and full-bodied, this will suit you. It's for drinkers who want intensity and aren't looking for delicate floral notes or bright acidity.
If you prefer clean, fruity, or tea-like coffees, this one will not appeal to you.
Best for: Dark roast lovers who want a heavy, spicy, low-acid cup with serious body.
How to Brew This Coffee
Espresso is where this coffee shines, especially poured short for a syrupy, intense shot that works beautifully in milk. French Press will emphasise the heavy body and earthy character, giving you a full-flavoured, musty cup. Moka pot suits the bold, low-acid profile and delivers the kind of strong, concentrated coffee this bean was made for.

This is one of the great, aged coffees of the world and a favourite of ours and our customers. If you like your coffee strong this is the one.
It takes it's name from the Malabar region in Southern India. The harvested beans are stored in warehouses awaiting the monsoon. When the monsoon arrives the warehouse doors are opened and the beans are exposed to the wind and rain whereupon they enlarge dramatically.
This process helps give them their unique flavour characteristics, which are bold, pungent and spicy. It is a dark roast, for those who like deep, strong, musty flavours. The process makes them somewhat inconsistent and the coffee may vary from batch to batch.
Please note that this roast is taken well into second crack and oils have already coated the beans. It will be really oily after a few days. We actually think this coffee is at its best about five days after roasting.
As an espresso, pour this one short (don't allow so much water through), it will be more syrupy and intense with less bitterness! It is definitely one to try and makes an amazing milk based coffee. Our favourite drink with this coffee would be a flat white although I find 2 shots in a small cup just a bit too much so I'm about 1 1/2 shots with milk! Mr Monsoon on the other hand likes 2 full shots and poured short!

Ways to Brew
-
Espresso
An intense, concentrated brewing method that forces hot water through finely-ground coffee under high pressure. This produces a small, powerful shot with rich crema, serving as the foundation for countless coffee drinks while delivering bold flavors and aromatic complexity.
-
French Press
A French Press (or Cafetiere) is a simple, manual coffee maker that brews rich, full-bodied coffee by steeping coarse grounds in hot water, then separating them by pressing a mesh filter down with a plunger, allowing the coffee's natural oils and sediment to remain for a bolder flavour.
-
Moka
The Moka brewing method uses a three-chambered, stove-top pot to create strong, concentrated coffee by forcing hot water through coffee grounds using steam pressure.
